RPI's New Inline Test System with Thermal Chamber -
Chamber Section (Hot, Cold, & Reheat)

There are three different chamber sections, hot, cold, and plain.
All three types of chamber sections are very similar in construction. The
common features include our 'sticky' top conveyor belts, triple sealing brush
system, removable side plexi-glass shields, and power buss bars. They all have
4 inch thick insulated walls, and two access plugs to the top plenum of the
chamber. A multi-layer glass window on the access plugs is an option. The
standard length of a chamber section is 8 feet.
In addition to the above
mentioned common features, a hot chamber section contains a squirrel cage style
blower wheel, driven by a 5 hp motor. It uses (6) 240 volt 1.0 KW strip heaters
for a total heat output capacity of 6.0 KW. These heaters are mounted to
framework mounted inside the plenum. The side of the hot chamber contains an
access plug which can be removed, allowing removal of the whole heater
assembly.
A cold section consists of three main parts; a chamber,
evaporator, and refrigeration. The cold chamber has two openings on the side
wall of the lower plenum. One opening for air to enter, and a second opening
for air to exit. These two openings are connected by short sections of
insulated ductwork to the evaporator. The evaporator is contained in an
insulated box with a blower wheel. This box can have either one or two
evaporators. If it has two evaparators, the box employs a motor driven
stainless sliding door which blocks flow through the defrosting evaporator.
This allows the system to run twice as long before having to be defrosted, by
switching between the two. It also provides the ability to keep running if a
problem with a evaporator is encountered. The blower is a 22 inch diameter
class III backward inclined aluminum wheel. It is driven by a 10 horsepower
motor. The compressor package uses a 40 horsepower screw compressor.
As
the name implies, a plain chamber section just has the common features of the
other two and nothing else. This type of section is used in conjunction with
either a main hot section or a main cold section to add length to the chamber.
The Hot/Cold Chamber Sections receives
pallets from the previous door section and sequences the pallets according to a
pre-programmed PLC timing sequence to achieve the desired soak time in the
chamber. Temperature setpoints of the chambers are done via the system's
operator interface touchscreen. If a test head is used at the end of the
chamber, pallets will stop at the test head location for testing before being
transferred to following door section. Pallets are transferred in and out via
SMEMA interface.
